The Woodland Wardens oracle deck is a 52-card nature-inspired divination tool and guidebook created by Nashville-based illustrator Jessica Roux and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing.
Overview and Design
The Concept: Each of the 52 full-color cards features a unique pairing of a wild animal and a matching medicinal plant, flower, or tree (such as the hare and the oak, or the hawk and the thistle).
The Artwork: The illustrations use a dreamlike, vintage aesthetic reminiscent of historical botanical paintings and naturalists like Maria Sibylla Merian, steeped in folklore, mythology, and literature.
The Guidebook: It includes a companion booklet detailing the symbolic meanings, historical backgrounds, upright/reversed interpretations, and reflective questions for each pairing.
Core Themes and Purpose
Reflective Practice: Designed for daily draws, meditation, and journaling rather than literal future-telling.
Psychological Mirror: The cards act as symbolic prompts or mental stimuli to help seekers process life transitions, boundaries, patience, and personal growth.
Gentle Symbolism: With no human figures, the imagery relies entirely on the traits of flora and fauna to offer a soft, cozy, and grounding alternative to traditional tarot.
