The plot follows Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare as they get ready for bed. Little Nutbrown Hare asks his father to "guess how much I love you," sparking a playful competition to quantify their love for one another:
Stretching arms: Little Nutbrown Hare stretches his arms out wide to show his love, but Big Nutbrown Hare’s arms are much longer.
Reaching up: Little Nutbrown Hare reaches as high as he can, but Big Nutbrown Hare can reach much higher.
Hopping high: Little Nutbrown Hare hops up and down, but Big Nutbrown Hare hops high enough to touch the tree branches.
Every time Little Nutbrown Hare thinks of a big way to measure his love, Big Nutbrown Hare easily surpasses it because of his size.
As Little Nutbrown Hare grows sleepy, he looks up at the night sky and thinks of the furthest thing possible. He declares that he loves his father "all the way to the moon."
Big Nutbrown Hare kisses his son goodnight, tucks him into bed, and whispers with a smile, "I love you right up to the moon—and back."
