The Bhagavad Gita is a 700-verse Hindu scripture that presents a philosophical dialogue between the Pandava prince Arjuna and the god Krishna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. [1, 2]
The Setting and Plot
The Conflict: Two related families, the Pandavas and the Kauravas, stand ready to fight a massive succession war. [1, 2]
The Dilemma: Arjuna looks across the battlefield and sees his own teachers, friends, and relatives in the opposing army. He breaks down with grief and refuses to fight, seeing only tragedy in killing his own kin. [1, 2]
The Dialogue: Krishna, serving as Arjuna’s charioteer, counsels him through his crisis of duty, revealing himself as an incarnation of the supreme god Vishnu. The entire conversation is recounted by the advisor Sanjaya to the blind king Dhritarashtra. [1, 2, 3]
Core Teachings
Dharma (Righteous Duty): Krishna tells Arjuna that running from one's righteous duty (swadharma) is a failure of character. For Arjuna, as a warrior, fighting an unjust threat is his moral responsibility.
Nishkam Karma (Action Without Attachment): Individuals must perform their duties with total sincerity but without attachment to the results or rewards of the action. Letting go of outcomes frees the mind from anxiety and destructive karma.
The Eternal Soul (Atman): Krishna explains that the physical body is temporary, but the inner soul is eternal, indestructible, and subject to reincarnation. Knowing this removes the fear of death.
Paths to Liberation (Moksha): The text outlines three main spiritual paths to unite with the divine:
  • Karma Yoga: The path of selfless action.
  • Bhakti Yoga: The path of loving devotion and surrender to God.
  • Jnana Yoga: The path of knowledge and spiritual wisdom
