Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Scarlet Letter (1850) is a 17th-century Puritan Boston tale of sin, guilt, and redemption. Hester Prynne is forced to wear a scarlet "A" (adultery) after bearing a child, Pearl, while her husband was presumed dead. She refuses to name the father, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, who suffers silently while her husband, disguised as Roger Chillingworth, seeks vengeance.
